Dad · Jim Burslem
Did you ever move as a child what was that experience like?
It was in 1948 that we moved from our home in Hanbury Crescent to what became our new home and the house where I grew up. I was seven years old when we moved and I think that it was January. I remember there was snow on the ground and being in a snowball fight on the day of the move. Eventually the furniture was loaded up and we drove up to our new house.
I don't remember having seen the house before but I am sure I must have done so. The house was quite a bit bigger than Hanbury Crescent but there four bedrooms one for my parents, one for me and another for my brother who was two. That left a spare bedroom for visitors and I do remember one our first visitors was Bruce Burslem, an Australian cousin. I also recall being thrilled with the size of the back garden that had a big lawn and then a zigzag path up to the back fence, behind which was small wood of horse chestnut, or conker, trees.
There was also an old air raid shelter that was also a good den. It was good place to grow up.
