Which family members do you wish you kept better in touch with?
I have thought about this for few weeks now and the answer is no-one. The fact is that you are constrained by the systems of the times. When I emigrated to Canada I made a promise to my mother that I would write to her each week and that I did until her death, after which I continued to write to my father. Telephoning was out of the question as it was about $2.00 per minute, that was much too expensive for a chat, so that option was kept for Christmas and perhaps once or twice a year on top of that.
We did try to keep our children in touch with their grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins by taking them with us where practical and in later years when my father was in his 90s I was able to get over to the UK to see him sometimes for as short a time as five days. That was hard work with the associated travel time and jet lag, but worth it. I can look back and say that I did my best and we continue to do this when we plan our holidays, we don't want to lose can't act with any of our kids or their children.
