How did you decide when to change jobs?
If I think about it, for the most part, the changes in my career came about because of the other things going on in my life. Except I suppose for the decision to come to Canada, and that was purely on a whim - time to see th world. I was fortunate in having the sort of job that freely allowed me to make that decision. In the 60's physiotherapists were in short supply almost anywhere in the world, or if I had stayed in Britain, almost anywhere i had chosen to live.
Later on, getting back into the work force was a choice to maintain my skills and the various jobs were worked around the demands on my time of a young family, and for the most part how much babysitting Dad was able to do at weekends or later, during the week when he was working from home. A permanent job came about when you kids were a little older and I worked at the Grace Hospital, convenient in being within walking distance of where we lived - I won't go into the challenges of working a full working day when you guys were in school, I am sure you all remember!
I changed from that job, which is what this question is about, when Dad was working away from home a lot and I could no longer keep all the plates twirling......I had a boss who was less than sympathetic and I finally blew a fuse and packed it in... she was disappointed and tried to convince me to stay. I honestly don't think could see why I was moving on! After that I had the perfect job at the Louis Brier Home & Hospital, the old Jewish Home for the Aged.
They were so thrilled to have a physiotherapist that I think I could have worked any combination of hours that I wanted - and I did. I probably would have stayed there for some time, it was a happy place to work with some great people but our move to Campbell River intervened. I didn't work for about a year after we moved here, Iaid very low - I could have started at the hospital the day we got here! When I started work it was full time and the rest is history, working there until our retirement in 2001.
