How did you get to school as a child?
In elementary school we all walked to school, I have no idea of the distance but…. it was down the road, over the rail bridge, past Mr Buck’s shop, up the lane past the farm, over the school crossing by the Fish & Chip shop and round the corner to Monkseaton County Junior Primary School on Apple Tree Gardens. I remember walking in all weathers, some terrible freezing days in the winter when to winds whipped in from the east off the North Sea and turned our legs in our school uniform gym slips literally blue with the cold - no jeans or pants for little girls in those days.
Later when I went to Grammar School, both in Whitley Bay and after we had moved to Beckenham in Kent, I rode my bike all the way through my school years. Again in all weathers as there was no other option, no bus route and no family car available. No helmets in those days, just my school beret in the winter and uniform straw boater in the summer!
