What is one of the funniest things youve ever done?
It never seems like there is ever a straight answer to these questions..... If by funny it means doing something that makes other people laugh, then there's no doubt that the 'sea lion' story has to be the one. Although at the time I didn't think it was funny at all.....and even now I can feel my wounded pride...... When we were small and lived in Northumberland we used to go up to Perthshire in the summer to stay with my grandparents in Alyth.
The whole family packed into the old Vauxhall, along with the dog who rode across the top of the back seat - a real live nodding dog! We usually had a trunk with our belongings for the summer lashed onto the top of the car and set off up the old windey A1/ A698 towards Scotland, crossing the border at Coldstream. We usually stopped there for ice creams, and there's another funny story, of the day we stopped for ice cream and then carried on and were some way down the road before we missed the dog!
We had to turn around and go back to Coldstream and there he was sitting faithfully waiting on the sidewalk! Our next stop was Edinburgh, where we often parked on the Castle Esplanade and had a picnic lunch. One time it was decided that we should break the journey ( it was 208.6 miles door to door - I remember asking my Dad 'how far?' as he counted down the odometer ) at Edinburgh Zoo... the story goes that we were all watching the sea lions by their pool, it was warm & sunny and they were all basking on the rocky surround to the pool.
Being not so tall, and very independant I made a solo decision that I would be able to see things much better if I was seated on the wall, so attempted to jump up and pull myself up onto the wall. of course, I overshot and fell off the wall into the sea lion enclosure. Much surprised, they all made that huge sea lion noise and simultaneously dived into the pool. A cascade of cold water soaked the onloookers. They were all laughing so hard and the sight of me scrambling off the rocks and back over the wall, just made it funnier.
I didn't get much sympathy at the time and had some horrendous black and blue bruises to show for it. As for things that seemed hilarious at the time, when I was a student, when Maggie and I were doing costumes for the hospital Christmas pantomime we had access to all sorts of odd old storage areas. We found an ancient wicker wheelchair that you could stretch out in a semi lying position, a remnant of the old days when people were actually 'nursed' in hospitals.
We dressed up in ancient clothing and she bundled me up in the chair in hospital blankets - the original 'basket case' - and then she pushed me around Herne Hill to some very weird looks, especially when I jumped out and she got in and we carried on.....sounds like the original script for a 'Little Britain'. We thought it was hysterically funny.... So many things are funny in retrospect..but at the time they are either a bit scarey or very uncomfortable... it is only when it's all over that you can see the funny side.
That's another Storyworth question I think!
