Whats the first major news story you can remember living through as a child

Sheila and I used to walk to school together when we lived in Whitley Bay. I went to Bygate Infants School while she walked on around the corner to Monkseaton County Junior Primary School on Appletree Gardens On the 6th of February 1952, I was five going on six, we got to my school said ‘goodbye’ and she carried on. As I walked into the school yard I could see children running around as usual before the bell rang for classes, but that day they were chanting: ’The King’s dead, the KIng’s dead.....!’ Indeed, King George the Sixth, King of the United Kingdom and of the Dominions of the British Commonwealth, had died in his sleep at Sandringham House in Norfolk as the result of a coronary thrombosis.

He was succeeded by his daughter Elizabeth, who was twenty five at the time. She was crowned Queen at Westminster Abbey on June 4th 1953. That event was probably the next biggest news story of the time that I can recall.
