Where were you when you found out that jfk had been assassinated how did it affect you?
When JFK was assassinated on November 22 1963, I was in Grade 12 my last year at Beckenham Grammar School for Girls. I was studying for my 'A'Levels in English and French, before going on to Physiotherapy School in London the following year. I remember I had just come home from school and was having a cup of tea with my Mum in the kitchen. It would be about 4.30 in the afternoon, which fits with the recorded time of the events in Dallas, at 12.30 CST.
Mum was doing the ironing and had the radio on as she liked to listen to Mrs Dale's Diary which finished at 4.30, followed by the news on the half hour. The Kennedy's were the 'celebs' of the time and seemed to be young and very exciting. Their popularity came on the heels of the disastrous invasion at Bay of Pigs in 1961 and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, when we in Britain felt very much sandwiched between the USA & Russia whose relationships were cool.
The threat of a nuclear war was very real.. It was certainly one of those moments that seared itself into memory, I don't think there is anyone who has forgotten where they were that day. I remember feeling quite stunned, and wondered what his death would lead to on the international scene and how it would potentially affect Britain
