How did you get to school as a child?

My first experience of school was in Corsham, Wiltshire where we were living during the war. I must have been five years old and the school was a one room school with one teacher who had to try and teach about 30 students. The school had maybe six or so tiered seats much like a theatre, the youngest kids sat in the front row and the big kids in the back row. My mother and I must have walked as there were no local buses.

When we returned to Wolverhampton in late 1946 or 1947 I went to Woodfield Avenue School,Penn (WASP) and we had a wasp as a badge on our green blazers. I walked to school then about a mile each way though on occasion caught the trolley bus if the weather was bad. When I got a place at the local Grammar School in 1952 then my means of transport was my bicycle, all down hill on the way to school and all uphill on the way home. School was about three miles away so it was a tough slog home, particularly on Thursdays when we had to go to school in Army uniform, battle dress serge, canvas gaiters and belt and army boots!
