Dad · Jim Burslem
How did your parents pick your name?
I think that this is the easiest question that I have had because I remember asking my mother why I was called James Frederick. The answer was that she and my father just liked the name James but the Frederick was a recognition of both my grandfathers. My mother's father was Frederick Bamford Duck and my dad's father was called Fred Burslem which is a bit odd as at the time it was unusual to be given only one name. The custom was to have the eldest son given a second name that was the surname of one of the grandparents such as Bamford or Clifton that was my father's second name.
On thinking about it I guess that Frederick is better choice than Duck, though it might pass as cool in Oregon! One of Fred's brothers was Sidney Joel Burslem and the name Joel came from a brother of their mother. Joel Tolefree had been killed in a railway accident in 1875.
