What foods do you dislike have these changed over time?
Have these changed over time? This is an easy one to answer. Junket! I don't think that anyone under the age of fifty has even heard of this dessert never mind having had to eat it.
What is it, I hear you ask? I looked up the Wikipedia entry and have entered it here for the benefit of newer generations. *"Junket *is a milk-based dessert, made with sweetened milk and rennet, the digestive enzyme which curdles milk. It might best be described as a custard or a very soft, sweetened cheese." This was a dessert or pudding of the wartime and immediate post-war years in England and I never did like it, whether because of the taste or texture I am not sure, but probably because of both.
You could taste the artificial flavouring, what I remember is strawberry or raspberry and the texture was very watery. When it was put in the bowl it slowly collapsed with a puddle of water around it. On one famous occasion when I was probably five years old I poured salt on it so I would not have to eat it, and not just a sprinkle but quite a lot. The result was that I got the junket back at every meal until I ate it all.
Hard-hearted perhaps, but the lesson was that you did not ever waste food. Remember that this was probably 1946 when food rationing was in full force and food rations were very slim. It was never served again though when I went to hospital to have my tonsils out guess what was served for a dessert. However this time I did not have to finish it off.
The only thing that I don't like now are green bell peppers. Although the truth is that they don't like me. I can eat red, yellow, orange and purple peppers which taste similar and also hot peppers but I don't dare let a green pepper cross my lips. I feel so ill.
I think it is because they are unripe and have some chemical in them at that stage in their development. I make a point of trying any unusual foods when we travel and have eaten all sorts of strange meats, fish and insects, cooked in all sorts of ways. Some I wouldn't seek out but would eat quite happily again if put in front of me BUT NOT A PLATE OF JUNKET!
